How to Write a Simple and Effective Short Film Review

Writing a review for a short film doesn’t have to be complicated! Whether you’re new to reviewing or just looking for some guidance, here’s an easy way to share your thoughts in just a few sentences—or more if you’re feeling inspired.

1. Watch the Film with an Open Mind
Enjoy the film, and pay attention to how it makes you feel. Notice any standout moments, interesting visuals, or sounds. Think about how the story is told and what emotions it brings up.

2. Summarise the Story
In a sentence or two, describe what the film is about. You don’t need to give away the whole plot—just share the main idea or theme. If you’re inspired, you can also briefly highlight what stood out to you, whether it was the visuals, sound, or acting.

3. Highlight What Stood Out

Mention one or two things that caught your attention. It could be the way the film looked, how the music added to the mood, or an actor’s performance. You don’t need to cover everything—just focus on what was most memorable to you.

4. Share Your Personal Take
Why did the film resonate with you? Did it remind you of something in your own life, or did it leave you thinking? Your personal connection to the film can make your review more unique and relatable.

5. Keep It Kind and Simple
There’s no need to be overly critical—focus on what you appreciated about the film. If something didn’t work for you, mention it briefly, but try to stay positive. Filmmakers often read reviews, and a kind word can go a long way!
